About Madrid's time zone
Spain used GMT, matching its geographic position, until 1940, when Franco's government shifted the country's clocks forward to align with Nazi Germany's Central European Time. That wartime change was never reversed, so Spain has sat roughly one zone ahead of where its longitude would place it ever since — a point regularly raised in Spanish debates about switching back.
