About Shanghai's time zone
China ran on five time zones until the newly formed People's Republic standardised the whole country onto a single zone, Beijing Time (UTC+8), in 1949. Shanghai sits close to that meridian, so the single-zone policy affects it far less than it does China's far western regions, which run several hours off true solar time as a result.
