About New York's time zone
US railroads carved the country into four standard time zones in 1883, including Eastern Time, to end the chaos of thousands of cities each keeping their own solar time; Congress made the system federal law with the Standard Time Act of 1918. New York's daylight saving dates have followed the Energy Policy Act of 2005 schedule, March to November, since it took effect in 2007.
